Following a rigorous selection process, The Myrtle Tavern, on Parkside Road in Meanwood, has reached the final six in the Stonegate Pub Partners Pub of the Year category of the Great British Pub Awards (GBPAs). Seeing off hundreds of other entries, the pub’s dedication to charity events and community initiatives formed a large part of the pub’s success.

The Great British Pub Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the fantastic work pubs do for our country and their communities, the established industry awards is widely considered to be the Oscars of the British Pub Industry.

During the Covid pandemic, the pub stepped up its community focus, offering a befriending service to regulars who may have been feeling lonely in lockdown. Giving to the community also meant the community were only too willing to support the pub in its time of need. The team hosted live quizzes, helped the community by dropping off parcels and delivered Sunday lunches to its customers’ doorsteps.

Although closed for the majority of last year, the Myrtle Tavern family has grown to over 30 members of staff. Publican Scott Westlake sites the hard work of his amazing and dedicated team as what makes The Myrtle what it is today, and it has recently risen to the Number 1 spot on TripAdvisor in Leeds.

Scott said “We are absolutely delighted to be in the finals of the Great British Pub Awards! The pub has gone from strength to strength, from setting up the site within the restrictions to maximise customer service, to being able to trade as normal now, it is amazing to have that recognised in such a way. I’m so proud of my team and everything we’ve achieved over the last 18 months.”

Simon Longbottom, CEO of Stonegate Group, said: “The entirety of the Stonegate Group is behind Scott and his team. We are incredibly proud of the ingenuity they have shown in the face of adversity and their contribution to the success of the Myrtle Tavern, as both a pub and as a business. On behalf of myself and the entire business, we wish them every success in the finals.”
