A Norwich publican who has been a regular at The Rose Tavern since the 1990s has fulfilled a long-held ambition after taking over the pub and helping transform it into a thriving destination for locals, students and sports fans.
The Rose Tavern reopened in June following a £100,000 investment from its pub company Stonegate Group, which saw the pub undergo a significant refurbishment, including a brand-new kitchen, upgraded beer garden and refreshed interior.
Publican Paul Murfitt, who previously lived just 150 yards from the pub, has long had his sights set on running the venue and is now drawing on decades of hospitality experience to shape its future.
Paul, who has worked as a landlord, chef and hotel manager throughout his career, said: “I’ve been coming to The Rose Tavern since the 1990s and always believed it was a fantastic pub with huge potential. To have the opportunity to take it on myself and be part of its next chapter is incredibly rewarding.”
The refurbishment was carefully designed to modernise the venue while celebrating its heritage, with original features and historic pub signage retained and displayed throughout.
He continued: “We wanted to modernise the pub while ensuring it didn’t lose touch with its past. The Rose Tavern has stood in Norwich since 1867 and has a rich history. We’ve carefully preserved features such as the pub’s 1920s emblems and historic signage, while investing in a brand-new kitchen, renovated beer garden and a fresh offer designed for today’s customers.
The 1920s emblems inside and several old pub signs have been kept as part of the pub’s story, while we’ve invested in areas that matter most to guests, including the kitchen, garden and entertainment offer.”
Since reopening, The Rose Tavern has evolved, attracting a broad mix of customers through a packed weekly schedule of events, live entertainment and value-led food and drink offers.
Guests can enjoy free pool nights, quiz evenings, karaoke, live music and live sports coverage, alongside regular food promotions including all-you-can-eat chicken wings, handmade pizza nights and burger-and-pint deals.
The venue has also developed a strong following among Norwich’s student community, with pool, darts and live sport helping cement its reputation as an affordable and welcoming social destination.
Paul said: “The response since reopening has been fantastic. We’ve had tremendous support from both local residents and students, and it’s been great to see people embracing everything we’re trying to do.
“We’ve focused on creating a pub with something happening every day of the week. Whether people want to watch sport, enjoy live music, meet friends for food or take part in one of our events, we want The Rose Tavern to be their first choice.”
Building on its successful first few months, the pub is set to launch a new street food-inspired food menu on 14 October, featuring pizzas, burgers and more.
With live bands performing regularly and a busy programme of events planned throughout the remainder of the year, Mr Murfitt is confident The Rose Tavern will continue to grow.
He said: “This pub has been part of the community for generations and that’s something we’re keen to build on. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and excited about what’s still to come.”
