Opening 13th May

Sporting legend Geoff Morton’s name lives on again in Acton as the signage of the newly-named Morton Arms pub is uncovered – 100 years after his birth.

The pub on Old Oak Common Lane, formerly the Wishing Well, has been renamed to recognise the incredible goalkeeping and cricketing talents of the late Geoff Morton who was born in Acton in 1922.

This month, as part of a £160,000 refurbishment, the Morton Arms, revealed it has changed its name in memory of Geoff Morton who played for Chelsea and Chelmsford City in wartime competitions. He later played for Watford where he kept eight consecutive clean sheets. On the cricket pitches, he played for Middlesex and Marylebone as a medium-fast bowler and after retiring as a player was an umpire.

Part of the award-winning Craft Union Pub Company which won the 2022 Best Community Operator title in the Publican Awards, the Morton Arms will be at the heart of its community for residents, local clubs and groups, and people working in the area when it reopens mid-May.

The emphasis is on making the pub warm and welcoming for all and so while there are no big structural changes, customers can look forward to a fresh new look including booth seating and comfortable, low-level furniture.

While the pub’s interior and name have changed, there will be familiar faces behind the bar alongside Operator Shaun Rendell to welcome regulars and newcomers.

Speaking this week, Shaun said: “This is an exciting time for the Morton Arms. The new name is really important to so many people around here, it’s great the name lives on for such a sporting legend. Just as sport brings people together so do pubs and that’s what it’s all about here at the Morton Arms. We look forward to seeing new and old faces again, pop in and see what we’ve done to the place.”

The bar will showcase great craft beers and cask ales, including popular cask and keg from national and local breweries, and a 20 plus cocktail menu. The drinks menus will include speciality spirits and wines from around the world. An added attraction will be live entertainment at the pub over the weekends.

Shaun said: “Our focus will be on making sure all our customers have a great time and enjoy a quality drink without a hefty price tag. We are your community hub, the pub where you call in, meet family, friends and colleagues, sit back and let us look after you! What better way is there to end a working day or have some down time over the weekend?”

Keep an eye out for further news about the Moreton Arms big launch party which will run over the Bank Holiday weekend alongside the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. There will be updates on news, offers and opening hours on the pub’s social channels.
