Following two rounds of rigorous judging, The Registry, on Leicester Street in Walsall, has reached the final six in the Best Pub for Late Night category of the Great British Pub Awards (GBPAs). Seeing off hundreds of other entries, The Registry’s creativity and innovation in adapting its business model, leading to the introduction of Popworld, formed a large part of its success.

The Great British Pub Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the fantastic work pubs do for our country and their communities, the established industry awards are widely considered to be the Oscars of the British Pub Industry. Contenders across multiple categories will be visiting over the coming weeks before the winners are determined at this year hybrid format, including a live stream awards ceremony and an overall GBPA winners’ event.

Throughout lockdown, The Registry consulted with customers to find out what they wanted from their local, what the team got back was a resounding request for some fun and excitement, which resulted in the introduction of Popworld. By day it remains a community pub, and by night the pub is bedecked with party gear, a DJ set and The Registry is transformed into an awe-inspiring Popworld Party.

In tandem with launching the Popworld initiative, the pub was also successful in extending its licensed trading hours. It now operates until 4am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lindsey Wakeman, General Manager of The Registry, said “We are absolutely delighted to be in the finals of the Great British Pub Awards! Blood, sweat and our love of 90’s cheesy music went into turning The Registry into what is has become today, so after a challenging year, it is amazing to be recognised in such a way. I’m so proud of my team and everything we’ve achieved over the last 18-months.”

Simon Longbottom, CEO of Stonegate Group, said: “The entirety of the Stonegate Group is behind Lindsey and her team. We are incredibly proud of the ingenuity they have shown in the face of adversity and contributing to the success of The Registry, and a pub and as a late night venue, in droves. On behalf of myself and the entire business, we wish them every success in the finals.”
