Local and tourist favourite, The Pack Horse in Hayfield, Derbyshire, has been recognised in the 2024 Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub list as one of the best gastropubs in the country.

The rankings, which celebrate the highest standard of pub dining in the UK, were launched in 2009 and are one of the most prestigious industry awards. The rankings are formulated following industry expert voting, and the final list reflects the opinions and expertise of 350 pub operators, food writers, pubco catering development managers, executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators.

Since its inception, The Pack Horse’s core focus has been on British, seasonal and sustainable produce, which has been a key factor in their success. Head chef, co-owner and author of The Pack Horse Hayfield: A journey through the seasons, Luke Payne, spearheads the drive towards ethically sourced produce and proudly upholds the provenance of his dishes.

He said: “Our butcher’s abattoir is located just four miles from our pub and our fishmonger has strong ties to the Peterhead fish market and sources us some of the finest North Sea seafood and Scottish day-boat catches. Here at The Pack Horse, you can eat well in good conscience.”

Fellow co-owner Emma Daniels added: “Our menu changes with the seasons and showcases the best of British produce all year round. Our focus has always been local and so it is a huge endorsement to be ranked within the top twenty gastropubs in the UK. We’ve got a fantastic team here at The Pack Horse and we are dedicated to creating the finest dining experiences for our guests.”

In this year’s Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropub commentary, The Pack Horse has been described as “a contemporary, yet classic, British gastropub” and a “stunner of a pub that serves some equally stunning cuisine.”

The pub was also the first Hayfield located establishment to receive an entry in the Michelin Guide.
