Islington Mayor, Kat Fletcher, re-opened the Steam Passage yesterday – the borough’s favourite community pub for sporting aficionados and craft ale connoisseurs, showing off it’s £300,000 makeover (Thursday 22nd September at 5:30pm).

London Beer Sommelier Benedict Sedgwick was also on hand to share his expert opinion at the VIP event: Hammerton’s Islington Steam Lager; Hophouse 13; Lilleys Rum Cider; and Bee Sting are just a few of the premium beers and cider on offer.

The development, creating six new jobs, fills the gap for a good honest local pub on Islington’s Upper Street. The pub has twelve brand new screens covering a glittering array of channels thanks to Sky and BT Sport. They will now be able to show up to five different sporting events at any one time, the design is set to make all sport supporters night!

In a nod to the sporting emphasis, the pubs previous owner, champion boxer Len Harvey 1939-42 will be reminiscent in the venue too with boxing glove and championship belt donated by Glynn Roberts on the night. The pub also receives its own blue plaque in the New Year.

Diversity extends to the food offer with a focus on pub favourites offering three different types of Pie, Grills and Sharing Planks offering the perfect social snacks.

Carl Hufton, manager of the Steam Passage said: “PREMIUM IS ABOUT EXPERIENCE, NOT JUST PRODUCT so we’re hosting weekly events from Open Mic Mondays, to European Football evenings and pub Quiz on a Sunday – more reasons to come out!”

The Steam Passage’s investment is an evolution of a successful traditional pub; they have nominated Noah’s Ark Children’s hospice as their chosen local charity. Noah’s Ark fundraiser Daisy Wilson presented a plaque of support for the pub, which will continue to fundraise throughout the year.

The Steam Passage has also lined up a range of offers including Mighty Monday with offers on big plates; Saturday sharers where guests can enjoy a 5 dish pick and mix plank for £8.99 and Social Sundays with a traditional roast dinner including unlimited roast potatoes, Yorkshire Puddings and gravy and a quiz, the perfect end to the weekend.
