On Sunday 29 May, The Bowling Green, Exeter is hosting a fundraiser for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust through a packed day of fundraising activities, including a ‘Big Shave’. The pub is accepting donations made in person at the pub and online through a JustGiving site.

The licensees, Nigel Cook and Saskia Russell, will be joined, on the day, by Mike Knight, who lives in the area, and they will completely shave their heads to raise money to keep two emergency air ambulances flying as well as two critical care cars on the road, providing enhanced and critical care in Devon.

Saskia’s hair will be donated to The Little Princess Trust, who provide real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other conditions. Moreover, Mike shaves his hair to fundraise for charities every three or four years. Nigel’s ponytail is coming off and has agreed to dye his beard before it is cut.

Nigel Cook, the licensee of The Bowling Green, said: “I am so proud that our pub will be hosting this fundraiser and we are eager to help the Devon Air Ambulance Trust save more lives. For the first time in nine years, I will lose my ponytail and shave my hair and beard, for this cause. This is our chance to show how we can support and help each other as a community.”

Stonegate Group has been supporting this fundraiser by providing Free Beer with all of the proceeds raised going directly to Devon Air Ambulance.

Along with the ‘Big Shave’ initiative, the pub has organized raffles for the day and has also donated all proceeds from its recent weekly quizzes to the cause. At the beginning of May, the winning team of the weekly quiz had the chance to spend sixty seconds behind the bar and become a ‘professional bartender’ for a few seconds. There will be some amazing prizes at the raffle such as pints of Jale Ale and bottles of beer, that have been donated by Dartmoor Brewery.

The Bowling Green has been promoting the upcoming event on its social media pages and through sign-ups at the pub.
