Everyone is wondering how the witches of Pendle are going to react to the £130,000 restoration owners have put into the Pendle Witch pub with more links to the folklore than first meets the eyeandhellip;
A far cry from a witches cabin the investment welcomes a quaint cosy beer garden, ambient décor, expansion of cask and craft beer and HD screens for sport. It is now a community haven, creating three new jobs.
Situated in the heart of Lancaster and capturing the hearts of locals and students alike, the renovated pub was showcased last Friday, 10th March. Guests enjoyed bubbles and menu tasters in a relaxed comfortable setting, where memoirs of Lancaster history embellish the walls; including a shrine, with a black and white photo of one of the Pendle Witches daughters.
“We are preserving the history of this pub, dating back to 1642, rumour has it the witches walked straight past here and horses stopped for water right outside, there’s certainly been a few supernatural occurrences – like doors opening and closing on their own!” said manager Cliff Waistell.
Accompanying the traditional beams and trinkets of Lancaster history, great sports viewing adorn the unique setting with nine HD screens showing Sky and BT sports. A line up of horseracing to boxing and rugby ensures all fans are catered to with uninterrupted sports viewing and table service during big games, which will showcase over the opening weekend in the run up to the final of the six nations.
A ‘Kings Feast’ menu boasts 100 combinations of dishes ranging from sharing plates to pub classics like beef andamp; ale pie and fish and chips. For those up for a challenge there is the option to ‘go large’ or take on the ‘man vs food’ burger challenge with four 6oz beef burgers, cheese and bacon, chicken schnitzel, pulled chicken and chorizo served with double chips, also great for sharing! Featuring dishes less than 600 calories, next to indulgent chocolate fudge cake, the menu satisfies all tastes.
Switching magic cauldrons for kegs the pub isn’t short of local brews with Lancaster and Moorhouses Breweries gracing the taps accompanied by craft alternatives.
“With this much going on it’s no wonder the witches want to join in from time to time! We’ve also geared up for summer with the best beer garden in the area – bring on the sunshine!” added Cliff.
The spellbinding beer garden is kitted out with multi-coloured benches; quirky undercover ‘shed’ seating; astro turf; and a pool table under a pergola – students rejoice. Pair that with two meals for £8.49 and the ‘Seven Deadly Gins’ and they’ll struggle for reasons to leave!
A weekly line up includes Monday open mic night; Tuesday pool league; Wednesday free pool; Thursday pub quiz; Friday night party; Saturday night party and ‘open the box’; social Sunday with sport, music quiz and of course traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings!
