The popular 18th century Three Horseshoes pub has reopened to bring Norton, Letchworth residents and visitors all the best of the Great British pub with up-to-date style and service.

There has been a sympathetic £400,000 refurbishment of the Grade II listed coaching inn to restore it to its former glory, ready to welcome regular customers and new faces.

The Three Horseshoes on Norton Road has offered hospitality to locals and passing travellers for over 400 years. The village itself dates back even further as Norton was first mentioned as ‘Norotune’, meaning the northern enclosed farm, in a charter in the year 1007.

Talking about the refurbishment, General Manager of The Three Horseshoes, Stephen Merison said: “The Three Horseshoes is a beautiful and historic pub in the heart of an amazing area. We are really excited to show off the pub which has been reinvigorated and refreshed and is an amazing example of everything a great British pub is and should be. We are very proud to open our doors again to the community and beyond and look forward to welcoming old and new faces back in. We are serving a fantastic new food menu and there is a great range of drinks to suit all tastes. Come in and see for yourself.”

Understandably, there has been great care taken during the refurbishment to protect the pub’s old tiled roof and brick gable stacks which are protected by its listed status. This same care and attention are afforded to the high quality and service standards which today’s pub customers can look forward to.

The bar serves a large range of cask ales, local beers and artisan spirits, and popular national and international beers, wines and spirits. Look out for pub classics and modern favourites on the food menu with plenty of choices to suit different diets.

Stephen added: “This is a great time of the year to make the most of the large garden. It’s looking amazing and really adds to the whole experience you can enjoy here. You can have a drink in the bar with friends, celebrate a family birthday over a meal, or tuck into one of brilliant traditional Sunday roasts with all the trimmings. Why not enjoy some refreshments while you’re walking the dog, we are pet friendly, or choose us for a special celebration and hire the stables.”

The stables provide an amazing private function room which is available to hire and has proved popular for special occasions, parties and business functions.  There is ample parking for visitors too.

The pub’s ‘School Room’ was the site of the Danes School until 1873 after which local children were taught in the nearby St Nicholas Primary School.

The area is steeped in history with Norton Manor mentioned in the Domesday Book and archaeological excavations show evidence of human activity going back to the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age, and into the Roman period.

With so much history surrounding the Three Horseshoes and Norton, it’s good to know there is a busy future planned too including live music, quiz nights and psychic nights.
