Community pub, Whitehills is promising to deliver sport by the bucket load when it re-opens this week following a circa £200k investment. The Chester-Le-Street pub, on the Waldridge Road is introducing sports viewing via Sky Sports and BT Sport as well as a whole host of new pub team nights for customers to take part in.

Close to the fells on the outskirts of the town, Whitehills has long served its community with good pub food, fresh local beer and a welcome retreat for people to meet and socialise. The investment means even better facilities and modern décor for the pub, bringing it bang up to date.

General manager Kathryn Rose and her team will be celebrating the pub’s re-launch with a special reception for loyal customers from 5pm on Friday 27th November. Guests are invited to visit early, enjoy a complimentary welcome glass of prosecco rosé and tuck into some of the pub’s delicious canapés as they take a sneak preview. At 7pm, the doors officially re-open with a full evening of entertainment planned. Customers will be enthralled by the tricks of Tommy Taylor, table magician, before getting into the party mood thanks to a live performance by Chester-Le-Street’s very own Wes Hood.

Open weekdays from 11am, Whitehills, has an excellent range of dishes on its menu from snacks and light bites to fresh salads, grilled dishes and burgers. Proper pub favourites, dishes such as a gold award winning Cumberland sausage and seasoned mash, mac ‘n’ cheese and selection of tasty British pies are available at two for £9.99 every day. Renowned locally for its mouth-watering Sunday lunch, Whitehills will continue to serve up its famed roast carvery – a choice of beef, turkey, pork or gammon, freshly prepared with homemade Yorkshire pudding and generous helpings of seasonal vegetables.

As keen supporters of local breweries, the pub will be stocking three local ales – Swedish Blonde and Samson from Houghton-Le-Spring based Maxim Brewery and Worker Ticket from Wallsend’s Mordue Brewery. Popular national ales Wells’ Bombardier and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord will also be on tap, whilst the pub will be serving up a selection of bottled craft beers, wines and spirits.

An exciting development, coinciding with the refurbishment, is the upgrading of the pub’s sports viewing facilities – four televisions situated in the bar and lounge and one large screen, all linked to SKY Sports and BT Sport, to showcase the latest sporting action including football, rugby, racing or cricket.

The pub will be introducing some brand new entertainment nights too, to sit alongside existing ones. A new pool night kicks off every Wednesday and a dominoes afternoon on Sundays, with new players for both encouraged to sign up and join in. Whitehill’s regular darts teams continue to practice and compete on Mondays and Fridays whilst the pub’s two quiz nights, general knowledge and a music and picture one, take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Live music featuring local performers will take place on the last Saturday of the month.

Several special Christmas events are planned throughout December. Santa is taking time out from his busy schedule on Saturday 19th December from 10am-12pm to visit the pub, meet youngsters and deliver presents to each child. Meanwhile, customers are encouraged to get in the Christmas spirit and dress up in the most outrageous festive jumper throughout the weekends of 11-12th December and 18-19th December, to win on the spot prizes.

Speaking of the refurbishment, Kathryn Rose said, “The refurbishment is a wonderful way for us to thank our many loyal customers by giving back a fabulously refreshed pub just in time for Christmas. Our new sports viewing facilities and added community sports team nights mean Whitehills may continue to play a huge part in our community for many years to come.”

The pub will open at 11am Monday to Saturday and at midday on Sundays, closing 11pm Monday to Thursday, 11.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 10.30pm on Sunday.

As an extra bonus, three new jobs will be created for local people at the pub following the refurbishment.
